Why intellectual property security matters
Small businesses are the backbone of the UK economy, yet they face growing risks to their most valuable assets which are often their ideas and innovations.
Intellectual property covers everything from product designs and software to trade secrets and business plans. Losing these to theft or cyber attack can be devastating. For many smaller organisations, even a single breach can mean the difference between growth and closure.
That is why the government has introduced a new scheme offering practical help and funding. The aim is to make sure that small businesses are not left exposed to security threats.

Secure Innovation Security Reviews
Up to 500 small and medium sized companies across the UK can now apply for Secure Innovation Security Reviews. These reviews are designed to help firms protect their intellectual property from hostile actors from cyber attacks and from state funded competitors.
Each review is carried out by approved experts who provide tailored advice. They look at the way a business manages sensitive information. They recommend best practice for staff checks. They suggest simple steps that can dramatically improve cyber security.
This is backed by government funding and forms part of a national strategy to build stronger and more resilient businesses, and highlights the importance of upholding comprehensive cyber security for SMEs.
In total around £1.3 million is being invested to support the first 500 companies. The focus is on sectors like artificial intelligence, life sciences, semiconductors defence and renewable energy.
These are areas of huge importance to the economy, and are also prime targets for intellectual property theft.
Evidence Of Success
This scheme is not without evidence. A pilot programme ran in 2023 and the results were striking.
98% of participating businesses reported that they now have enough knowledge to identify security threats. Another 98% confirmed they would continue to improve their IT security measures after the review.
This shows that expert advice and small investments can have a lasting impact on awareness and resilience.
The Urgency Of Stronger Protection
Figures from the National Protective Security Authority show that 39 per cent of companies have only one protective or cyber security measure in place.
Even more concerning is that 55% do not carry out pre-employment screening of staff.
These gaps leave businesses vulnerable not only to cyber criminals but also to insider threats. With intellectual property being so valuable it is vital that small companies address these weaknesses before they suffer a loss.
The value of complete IT staff training of all employees therefore cannot be understated. QiC Systems offer Staff IT training for your small business, covering structured key info around cyber security and additional IT support via phone and email.
